Next to Radiohead in Grant Park, last night's show was the most amazing show I've ever had the pleasure of attending. Frank Black opened, just him and a guitar. He ruled. He played 'Where Is My Mind' about halfway through and people lost their minds (pun intended). That was so awesome, I can't even explain it. Foo Fighters played as an 8 piece - including Pat Smear on 3rd guitar. Watching Pat and Dave Grohl on stage together playing acoustically was really amazing because of how bad I wanted to be in that audience for the Nirvana MTV Unplugged show.

They played for nearly 2 hours, then played a 3 song encore. Dave came out alone for the encore, and the band only rejoined him for the last 1/4 of the 3rd song (Everlong). When he first came out for the encore he told a 15 minute story about how he first discovered live music and the first show he ever went to was in Chicago at the Cubby Bear where he saw Naked Raygun in 1982 or 1983.

He went on to talk about how he was living in Virginia and his hardcore band toured the states and broke up in Cali where he then got an offer to play in a band he had never seen, with 2 guys he had never met - Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. He then talked about moving to Olympia, Washinton into a tiny one bedroom apartment with Kurt and how he had to sleep on the couch because Kurt insisted on having the room so he could be alone. The story lead into him talking about how the only entertainment they had was this old guitar which at night, Dave would write songs on. He wrote and recorded a 4-song demo, which one song, all these years later ended up on their newest CD "In Your Honor". The song was "Friend of a Friend" and after hearing the history to that song it was really sad to hear him sing it. I was like the hugest Nirvana fan, so hearing him talk openly about Kurt was hard for me to listen to - and from what I saw - the same for everyone around me.

God damn, that show was amazing. I've never seen them put on the "rock show", but I don't think I'll ever miss a Foo Fighters show from now on.

Craig says...
I'll have to try this for Killers tickets which I thought went on sale this morning like 99% of all shows do but actually did on Friday morning.

I was at the Radiohead show in Grant park. The only heartbreaking thing was that I knew right then I would never see a better concert. With the skyline in the background? Are you kidding me?
